AI Agents in Surveys Simulating Human-Like Interviewers Online
Online surveys have made research faster and cheaper, but they often feel impersonal. Respondents click through questions without much thought, and researchers miss the richer engagement that comes from human interviewers. AI agents are beginning to bridge that gap.
By simulating the role of an interviewer, AI agents can make digital surveys more conversational. Instead of a static questionnaire, respondents interact with a virtual assistant that can probe, clarify, and adapt in real time. For example, if someone gives a vague response, the agent can follow up with “Could you tell me more about that?”,something a traditional survey cannot do.
These agents also bring consistency. Unlike human interviewers, they never get tired, skip questions, or unintentionally influence answers. They provide the same tone and pacing for every participant while still allowing flexibility in how questions are asked.
The value goes beyond engagement. With AI agents, open-ended responses are richer, dropouts are lower, and the overall experience feels less transactional. Researchers gain higher-quality data, while respondents feel more understood.
That said, balance is important. Respondents need to know they are talking to an AI, and researchers must ensure the experience is respectful and transparent. The goal is not to fool people into thinking they are in a face-to-face interview, but to capture the best parts of human interaction in a digital setting.
As surveys continue to evolve, AI agents may prove to be the missing piece that brings warmth and depth back into online research.
